Dangerous Ideas at Ciudad de las Ideas 2013

Ciudad Candid Photo

Held annually in Puebla, Mexico, La Ciudad de las Ideas (CDI) is an “International Brilliant Minds Festival”, unique in its genre and created by the polymath Dr. Andrés Roemer, whose purpose is to empower citizens and present the most provocative and innovative ideas in sciencetechnologyartdesignpoliticseducationculturebusinessentertainment and other areas of knowledge.

Alphachimp's Peter Durand produced individual painting and drawings for each artist, scientist, leader, performer and "Gifted Citizen" who shared their dreams with us on stage.

Creativity Moves Nashville (and Alphachimp!)

Perrin Ireland graphically records Creativity Moves Nashville; Credit: Matthew Freise, NossiAlphachimps love the lure of the open road- we’ll willingly pack our markers and paper, load up the old roller luggage, and travel around the world to graphically capture an event.

But the events we attend at home, here in Nashville, are a sweet relief. What could be better than going to an action-packed event full of inspiring speakers who all live within a stones throw of us, and then getting home in time for dinner?

Needless to say we were thrilled to be invited to scribe a recent local event, Creativity Moves Nashville. Organized by Jacob Weiss, this half-day conference, held on May 24th, was devoted to connecting artists with causes and entrepreneurs.

Weiss exemplifies a compelling method for artists to lead creative lives full of meaning and success. The solution is simple: make your art relevant, and purposeful, by connecting with a nonprofit or an entrepreneur with a cause, and create impact in your community.

#TEDMEDscribe Jill Sobule

Alphachimp loves the musical stylins of Jill Sobule. Whether musing about the death penalty, anorexia, or what it would be like if Edgar Allen Poe had taken Prozac, she delights and challenges in her sly, funny way.

Check out our electronic scribing of her presentations at #TEDMED so far, in addition to the other incredible speakers we've gotten to see. If you missed her, don't worry- she's peppered all over the schedule, so we'll be hearing lots more about how "Disease Don't Care!"

On Septermber 2nd, 2011, I went with Peter Durand and Perrin Ireland to The Curb Center at Vanderbilt University to support Peter as he offered a Creative Practice Bootcamp on graphic faciliation. I also had the honor of scribing for Parker Gates, designer and faciliator for the design studio at e+ CancerCare, located in Nashville, TN. And finally, I even got to sit in as a participant on a session by Eric Booth, teaching artist, actor, author, and international arts learning consultant, on Habits of Creative Problem Solving.

Insights from the Science and Public Leadership Fellows Program

At the PopTech Science and Public Leadership Fellows retreat at National Geographic headquarters earlier this month, the program’s faculty provided key insights to help equip the 2011 Fellows with enhanced leadership, collaboration and communication skills.

2011 PopTech Science and Public Leadership Fellows

Member of this group are high-potential early- and mid-career scientists working in areas of critical importance to the nation and the planet. They represent a corps of highly visible and socially engaged scientific leaders who embody science as an essential way of thinking, discovering, understanding and deciding.

Jeff Nesbit, Dennis Dimick and Lisa Witter on storytelling

Registration for Becoming a Rockstar Scribe opens Aug. 1st

We have gotten so many great questions, sweet notes of support, tweets, and best of all... over 100 people are participating in our current class:

Become a Rockstar Scribe at School or Work
      http://learntoscribe.com

At first, we thought that this would appeal mostly to passionate educators, students, and facilitators who don't necessarily think of themselves as artistic, but who want to incorporate visual learning into their work.

We have been honored (and bit intimidated) to see veteran graphic recorders and guru facilitators joining as well!

This is truly a global classroom: Students from the UK, Belgium, Singapore, Ecuador, Australia, New Zealand and all over North America have jumped on board. There have been some great questions and we will do my best to answer them all.

------------------------------------------

QUESTION #1: WHAT TIME ARE CLASSES AND WILL I BE ABLE TO WORK THEM INTO MY HECTIC SCHEDULE?

The main question has involved the class format. So, to be clear, this is a self-paced set of video modules. Once you register, you receive one module every seven days.

The course is divided into six modules, one per week. But don’t worry!

There is no set schedule to view or complete any of the assignments. This is built for your personal development. Work at your own pace.  Each module builds upon the previous section and supported by videos, references, suggested reading, and PDF documents.

You can review videos and materials at anytime, day or night, on your laptop, iPhone, iPad or web-enabled device.

------------------------------------------

QUESTION #2: HOW MANY SLOTS ARE AVAILABLE?

Our goal is to have the community be large enough to generate some real  energy and vibrancy, but manageable enough to actually get to know people and interact.

We currently have 99 people signed up on the waiting list, and fully expect to sell out once registration *officially* opens on Aug.1st. (For folks on the waiting list, we will open registration towards the end of July.)

------------------------------------------

QUESTION #3: HOW MUCH DOES IT COST AND WHAT DO I GET?

First off, before Aug.1st, students will save $200 on the course. That is close to 40% off! Afterwards, the price will be $497.

Second, you will have access to awesome video tutorials packed with techniques, tips, tricks, and technology to kick-start your Rockstar Scribe status.

Third, those who have signed up are already sharing their hopes, dreams, and artwork in the Rockstar Trailer, a platform for uploading photos and  videos as we go through this creative journey together. So, this is truly interactive and, er, dare I say,... fun!

Finally, there are some pretty deep discounts available for groups of 5 or more, so bringing along friends and colleagues with pay off.

------------------------------------------

QUESTION #4: WHERE DO I SIGN UP?

Funny you should ask...

Hope to see you in our August class!

Download the 2010 PopTech Sketchbook

Influenced by a season of catastrophic downfalls and colossal system failures, the theme of the PopTech 2010 conference was Brilliant Accidents, Necessary Failures, and Improbable Breakthroughs.

In a mobile paint studio in the skybox above the PopTech stage, over 30 paintings and drawings were cranked out in real-time over the three days.

In the last days before Christmas, we (finally) created a PDF combining incredible photos by Kris Krug.
